BRAIN-CENTRIC RELIABILITY™

The Why of Human Reliability
For decades now, safety leaders have been trying to reduce human error and unlock the mystery of why good employees make poor decisions. For instance:
  • Why does an assembly-line worker, with many years of experience conducting the same, routine task, suddenly make an error that results in a serious injury or disruption to the operation?
  • Why does a worker miss important information when they were monitoring a set of gauges right in front of them?
  • Why does a driver make a fatal mistake while going along a route they know like the back of their hand?
Now, for the first time, we are starting to get definitive answers to these questions through the benefits of neuroscience research. DEKRA Insight has combined all these findings into a new practice called the Brain-Centric Reliability™ System. All the solutions within this practice, draw on applied neuroscience combined with High-Performance Reliability Organizational (HighPRO) Principles to define the "why" of human behavior.
The Brain-Centric Reliability™ System
Many of the potential hazards and safety risks at work are housed in our brains. These Brain-Centered Hazards, as we call them, are exacerbated by the fact that critical organizational elements - including work environments, technological interfaces, operating procedures, training, work schedules, and even risk management and the leadership actions and messages that shape organizational culture - are not aligned with how the human brain actually works.
Operational reliability is the primary performance outcome determining business success. Critically, though, all components of operational reliability have to be aligned, and drawing effectively on the new neuroscience, to achieve sustainable success. These components include organizational reliabilty (culture and leader messaging and modeling, in particular), process reliability (and especially brain-aligned procedures, human-machine interfaces, and other performance tools), and especially frontline human performance reliability driven by brain-trained personnel capable of delivering Right First Time performance.
DEKRA Insight's Brain-Centric Reliability™ System addresses that disconnect by applying recent neuroscience research to modern workplaces. The solutions introduce a mitigation approach that enables leaders to reduce exposures to these newly identified hazards. This is vital because, if left unattended, Brain-Centered Hazards can create high-consequence exposures as serious as loss of controls. In fact, some of the most serious organizational accidents have involved Brain-Centered Hazards that have typically been classified as "human error."
In light of recent neuroscience findings, companies cannot continue to leave these Brain-Centered Hazards unidentified or unaddressed. The Brain-Centric Reliability™ System examines which Brain-Centered Hazards are prevalent and institutes new brain-aligned operational and safety defenses to reduce exposures in our workplaces.
Using our Brain to Overcome its Weaknesses
The Brain-Centric Reliability™ System is installed through a set of powerful consultations that define what Brain-Centered Hazard™ exposures are, and what you can do to address them in the workplace. You will get a practical look at the science underlying concepts - like cognitive fatigue, and human vision system deficits for example - and learn ways to build greater operational reliability into your organization by addressing the work system rather than attempting to simply change the worker. The result is improved operational reliability including sustained safety and quality improvements based in Right First Time performance.
