PSCI & DEKRA Insight Jointly Promote Health and Safety at Work for the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Industries in China

Shanghai, China – September 23, 2016 – DEKRA Insight, a global leader in safety at work, co-hosted a four-day event entitled, “Supplier Competence: Understanding Responsible Business Practices”, held in Shanghai by the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI).
More than 250 of the world's leading pharmaceutical brands (Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Boehringer Ingelhelm, Lilly, Bayer, GSK, MSD, Takeda, etc.) and their suppliers attended the event.
The event showcased six topics, chemical reaction hazards and uncontrolled reaction evaluation, process safety management, green chemistry, industrial hygiene, labor protection and business ethics, as well as environmental compliance.
Mr. Frank Zhou, head of Process Safety for DEKRA Insight in China, was the host of the event. Ms. Julie Brautigam, Vice Chairman of PSCI, Vahid Ebadat, PhD, Chief Technology Officer for DEKRA Insight, attended and spoke at the opening session.
"PSCI is committed to creating better social, economic, safety and environmental conditions for the pharmaceutical supply chain, which aims to promote the understanding and skilled knowledge of workplace and environmental health and safety issues within the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries." commented Julie Brautigam.
Vahid Ebadat, PhD. kicked off the conference with a talk entitled, "Preventing catastrophic accidents through effective process safety capacity-building and safety culture management". He stated, "Flammable gases, vapors, dusts, toxic and reactive chemicals are prone to fire, deflagration or chemical reactions in the process of generation, handling or storage."
Ebadat continued, “Major safety incidents have been a constant reminder of the need for companies to more effectively understand and manage the risks of process safety hazards. At the leadership level, a process safety management system and a top-down safety culture should be established. Organizational-related process safety capabilities can be established through data analysis by appropriate personnel with a strong educational background, experience, and relevant training.
As one of the organizers, a number of process safety experts from DEKRA Insight discussed several important topics including chemical thermal stability assessment technology, calorimetric reaction characterization, fire and explosion hazards in the pharmaceutical industry, process safety management and sustainable development for pharmaceutical companies, process safety accidents in the pharmaceutical industry and lessons learned. They also provided in-depth presentations to participants on process safety management and analysis as well as prevention of chemical reaction hazards.
