Combustible Dust 101: What It Is and How the Hazard Develops

In many facilities, combustible dust is not something new. It is already part of everyday materials, processes, and equipment.
The challenge is not whether it exists. It is whether it is fully understood.
This 30-minute session is the starting point of a four-part series designed to build from foundational knowledge to more advanced topics. In this first webinar, we focus on the basics: what combustible dust is, why it matters, and how the hazard develops in real operations.
You will learn how common materials can behave under certain conditions, what needs to be present for a fire or explosion to occur, and how these situations develop in day-to-day environments.
Presented by Scott Czarnecki, DEKRA Process Safety expert, this session draws on real-world experience to introduce how combustible dust hazards form and why they can be difficult to recognize.
By the end of the session, you will have a clear understanding of the fundamentals of combustible dust and be better prepared for the next sessions in the series, where we will take a closer look at where dust risks exist and how they show up in real facilities.
