New powertrain test cell adds battery simulation and high-speed/high-torque dynos to DEKRA’s Automotive Test Center of Excellence in Plymouth, MI

DEKRA, a global leader in safety, security, sustainability, testing, and certification, today announced the launch of e-motor, inverter, and integrated e-axle dynamometer testing at its Automotive Test Center of Excellence in Plymouth, Michigan. The new powertrain cell extends the Michigan lab’s role as an innovation hub for automotive testing and validation in North America. The offering builds on DEKRA’s continued growth in Michigan, including the Center’s grand opening in 2025 and recent strategic expansions serving connected and electrified mobility.
“ We’re responding to what our customers asked for—trusted powertrain data, delivered quickly, from a partner who understands the entire development cycle. This new capability strengthens our innovative and growing test portfolio in Michigan.”
John Tesoro, President, DEKRA Region The Americas
“By pairing battery emulation with advanced dyno control and synchronized measurements, we deliver repeatable efficiency maps and transient results that engineers can drop straight into vehicle models and calibration workflows.”
Andrés Moreno, SVP, Digital Product Solutions, Americas

What’s included

  • Battery simulation: up to 1,200 V / 1,000 A / 500 kW (bidirectional; fast transient response; low ripple[JM1] [JM2] )
  • Absorber/motoring dynamometers:
    • Input dyno (1): 450 kW, up to 26,000 rpm; Inertia of 0.036 kgm² [JM3]
    • Output dynos (2): 460 kW each, 5000 Nm (Nominal), up to 6000 Nm (Overload for 30 seconds)
    • HBM Torque Meters: T40MS and T40B.[JM4]
  • Power analysis & DAQ: 7 Channel Power Analyzer
  • Scope clarification: This service is conducted in a powertrain dynamometer cell and is not an EMC/chamber test (DEKRA’s EMC/RF services are available separately).

Typical programs & deliverables

  • Speed×torque efficiency & loss mapping (traction and regen; quadrants Q1/Q2)
  • Controls & transients (torque steps, tip-in/out, field-weakening, response/latency)
  • Thermal characterization (continuous and 30-second power; derating curves)
  • Outputs: contour plots and CSVs, power-quality/harmonics summaries, synchronized raw data with calibrations and uncertainty statements
This new capability complements the Automotive Test Center of Excellence in Plymouth, MI, which DEKRA opened in 2025 as a multi-disciplinary facility supporting future mobility across EMC, environmental reliability, connectivity, and digital trust services. It also follows strategic growth steps in Michigan that expand DEKRA’s regional footprint and service depth for OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers.
