Don Martin: Why should I care about SIF at my workplace?

Don Martin is a safety industry veteran with over four decades of experience. His area of expertise is the design and implementation of fatality prevention programs, environmental health and safety (EHS) management systems, risk management programs, and organizational culture change initiatives for companies worldwide.

Don works with senior leaders and executive management teams to develop and implement strategic solutions that improve safety operations and employee engagement. He also has extensive experience as an executive coach and has provided personal development and safety leadership training at every level, from the front lines to the C-suite.

One of Don’s primary areas of expertise is the elimination of fatalities, injuries, and catastrophic incidents. He has co-authored numerous published, peer-reviewed papers with the most recent ones entitled, “Does Zero Tolerance Really Work?” and “Determining SIF Potential”. He is also leading an industry consortium-sponsored research project for DEKRA, which is focused on the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities. He is well-known for his expertise in accident investigations, safety leadership development, improvement of organizational culture effectiveness, and delivery of world-class safety performance programs, and is frequently asked to speak at safety conferences.

Don’s career in the safety industry covers a broad spectrum of roles to include industrial hygiene, occupational health, security, and environmental and risk management. Over the course of his career he has helped countless clients in industries, including offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration, mining, pulp and paper, construction, railroad transportation, public utilities, and consumer products.

Prior to joining DEKRA in 2006, Don worked successfully at every EHS level in the insurance, petrochemical, and pulp and paper industries. He earned a BS in environmental science from Sam Houston State University, and an MPH in occupational health and aerospace medicine from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Additionally, Don is a certified industrial hygienist and a certified safety professional.

Don is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and was a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) for over 25 years. He is past president of the Wheatland chapter of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and is a current member of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, and the American Society of Safety Professionals(ASSP).
